When this order came about recently, to ‘shelter in place’, initially I wasn’t sure how it made me feel;

nervous, a bit panicked, confused.

The term shelter, used as a noun, is defined as ‘something beneath, behind, or within which a person, animal, or thing is protected from storms, missiles, adverse conditions, etc.’

Feeling protected; from the weather, from war, and - in this time - from illness.

Our homes are our shelters.

A couple parts in the definition stood out to me;

’something within, protected from adverse conditions’.

Besides our houses physically protecting us from the outside, we have the ability to mentally give ourselves shelter from the panic and stress and uncertainty from the things happening in our world.


I wanted to share with you, my shelter in place.

It started out in our gym room, with the treadmill and weights, but it didn’t feel right. I moved it into our spare bedroom. The lighting is just right, it feels cozy. Sometimes I light just one candle, sometimes I light them all. White string lights are my favorite, and I want them anywhere I can put them. I’ve never grown out of burning incense. Sometimes I bring my tea or coffee and a blanket.


This is where I do my yoga and meditation. I don’t always feel like it. But even sitting in there for 5 or 10 minutes, does so much for my soul. It quiets the world and my mind.

My house is giving me shelter from the world as it battles this virus outside, and I am giving shelter to my heart and mind during this emotionally bewildering time.

Do you guys have a special spot dedicated for sheltering your soul?


Don’t be intimidated to try meditation. I totally was. But there’s so many different ways to do it, it can feel different every time. You don’t even have to be sitting in one place - it can be going for a walk! Just give your mind a break, listen to the rhythm of your breath, focus or don’t focus. But do let your mind be still for a little bit, and see how it makes you feel.


Let sheltering in place be a positive experience.

Good foggy morning my friends!

Today I decided to get up with the sun. In times when things feel too big and out of control, it’s good to take a breath and be grateful for the things you can control, like when to get out of bed.

Keeping some routine to your days is helpful to stay grounded, maybe even adding something new, like getting up to watch the sun rise. I started with my secret stash of Dunkin Donuts coffee, put on a big scarf, lit a candle (made with love), and sat on my front porch. I can’t say it was a beautiful sunrise, or that I could even see it through the fog, but I got to see how everything outside started to do their morning routines.

The birds bounce between houses and feeders, the street cats start stretching their legs, and it all felt very calming and okay.

So I think I’ll do it again tomorrow! Anybody want to join me with the sun?

Just keep hanging in there, take this one day at a time, control the things you can, and when you can’t - find something in there that you can. My go to, and it’s the simplest thing, is to light a candle. Adding extra light and warmth, I decide when its lit and when I blow it out, and it brings me peace to watch, kind of like being mesmerized by a bonfires flames.
